Wasp Species in Moraira
The Costa Blanca is home to several wasp and hornet species, and Moraira's warm climate and abundance of outdoor living spaces — pergolas, terraces, garden walls and shuttered windows — makes it a particularly common location for nest problems throughout the spring and summer months.
The European paper wasp (Polistes dominula) is by far the most commonly encountered species in Moraira and across the wider Costa Blanca. Paper wasps are slender, yellowish-brown insects that build small, open-celled paper nests from chewed wood pulp. They are extremely common in domestic settings, attaching their nests under roof eaves, behind window shutters and persianas, inside garden pergolas and BBQ areas, under terrace furniture, and in wall cavities. A typical paper wasp nest in summer may contain several hundred individuals — more than enough to inflict serious stings if disturbed.
The European wasp (Vespula germanica) also occurs on the Costa Blanca and builds larger, enclosed nests, typically in underground cavities, in hollow walls, or in loft spaces. These nests can reach very large sizes by late summer — sometimes containing several thousand workers — and are considerably more aggressive when disturbed than paper wasps.
The European hornet (Vespa crabro), the largest eusocial wasp in Europe, is present in the area and builds large papery nests in hollow trees, wall cavities and roof spaces. While hornets are generally less aggressive than Vespula wasps when undisturbed, their large size and potent sting make professional removal essential. More recently, sightings of the Asian hornet (Vespa velutina) have been increasing in Spain — this invasive species is a particular threat to honeybee populations and requires specialist treatment.
Why You Should Not Treat Wasp Nests Yourself
We regularly receive emergency calls from homeowners who have attempted DIY wasp nest treatment and been badly stung in the process. We strongly advise against any attempt to treat or remove a wasp nest without professional equipment and expertise, for the following reasons:
- High sting risk — a nest in peak summer condition can contain 3,000 to 8,000 wasps. Disturbing the nest without protective clothing will cause an immediate, aggressive defensive response. Multiple stings can be dangerous even for people without known allergies.
- Anaphylaxis risk — wasp venom is a common cause of severe allergic reactions. Anaphylaxis can develop rapidly and be life-threatening. Even people who have been stung without serious reaction in the past can develop an allergy over time.
- Ineffective products — consumer wasp sprays are not powerful enough to destroy a mature nest effectively and may only partially suppress it, leaving a damaged, highly agitated colony that remains dangerous for days.
- Access problems — nests inside wall cavities, roof spaces or high under eaves require specialist equipment to treat safely.
A professional pest controller has the correct personal protective equipment, professional-strength insecticides, and the experience to assess and treat the nest quickly and safely with minimal risk.
Our Wasp Nest Removal Process
Our technicians follow a proven, safe process for every wasp nest removal call in Moraira and the surrounding area:
- Assessment — on arrival, the technician will locate the nest, assess the species, size and accessibility, and determine the safest treatment approach.
- Protective equipment — full bee suit and protective equipment is worn for all wasp nest treatments, regardless of nest size or perceived risk.
- Professional insecticide application — fast-acting professional insecticide is applied directly into the nest entrance and across the nest structure, killing workers on contact and destroying the colony within minutes to hours depending on nest size and species.
- Nest removal — once the nest is confirmed dead (typically the same day or the following day), physical removal of the nest can be carried out to prevent re-use the following season and to eliminate any residual odour that might attract scouts.
- Prevention advice — we provide practical advice on deterring future nest establishment, including sealing common nesting sites and early-season inspection of known nest locations.
Emergency same-day service is available for urgent situations. All treatments are carried out by fully licensed, insured pest control technicians using EU-approved products.
