Common Ant Species in Moraira
The Costa Blanca is home to a number of ant species, but none is more troublesome — or more widespread — than the Argentine ant (Linepithema humile). Originally from South America, this species is now considered one of the world's most invasive and ecologically damaging insects. It has established itself throughout the Mediterranean coastline and is the dominant ant species across the entire Costa Blanca region, including Moraira, Teulada, Calpe and Javea.
Unlike native ant species, Argentine ants form supercolonies — vast, interconnected networks of nests spanning entire neighbourhoods, hillsides and urbanisations. A single supercolony can contain hundreds of millions of individual ants. Because colonies from the same supercolony do not fight each other, populations grow unchecked and can completely overwhelm an area within a single season.
Other species encountered in the Moraira area include Lasius niger (the common black garden ant), Tapinoma nigerrimum (a large, dark ant species also common on the Costa Blanca that builds extensive underground nests), and in some areas, invasive fire ants (Solenopsis invicta) which are of increasing concern across southern Spain. Fire ants are aggressive, can sting repeatedly and represent a genuine health risk, particularly to young children and those with allergies.
Why Ants Invade Costa Blanca Homes
Moraira's hot, dry summers are the primary driver of ant incursions into homes. As outdoor temperatures soar and natural food and water sources become scarce, Argentine ant colonies extend their foraging trails indoors in search of moisture and nutrition. A single ant scout finding a water source in your kitchen will rapidly recruit thousands of workers.
Typical Moraira villa features that attract ants include irrigation systems and drip lines (which provide reliable moisture in the garden), swimming pool surrounds and pool plant rooms, terrace areas with food residues, and ornamental planting that harbours aphids — a key food source for Argentine ants, which farm aphids for the honeydew they produce. Cracks in terrace tiles, expansion joints and gaps around external pipe penetrations all serve as ant highways into the building.
The mild Costa Blanca winter means ant colonies never fully die back, so populations compound year on year if left untreated. Properties left empty over winter can return in spring to find established colonies throughout the building.
Our Ant Treatment Methods
Effective ant control on the Costa Blanca requires understanding the biology of the species involved. Over-the-counter sprays may kill foraging workers but do nothing to address the queens and nests driving the infestation. Our approach targets the entire colony:
- Ant bait stations — slow-acting, transferable bait carried back to the nest by foraging workers, ultimately killing queens and the broader colony. Highly effective against Argentine ants.
- Perimeter spray treatment — residual insecticide applied around the exterior of the building, entry points and garden boundaries to create a lasting barrier against incursion.
- Garden and terrace treatment — targeted treatment of nest sites, foraging trails and areas of high activity including irrigation systems and pool surrounds.
- Indoor treatment — targeted application to entry points, wall junctions and kitchen areas to address active indoor infestations.
- Colony identification — correct species identification is essential, as different ant species respond to different baits and treatment strategies. We always identify the species before selecting our approach.
We provide practical advice on reducing attractants — such as fixing leaking irrigation, removing aphid-infested plants near the house, and sealing cracks in terraces and external walls — to supplement professional treatment and extend the period of control.
All products are EU-approved, applied by licensed pest control technicians, and safe for use around children, pets, pools and gardens when applied correctly.
